American football needs a new name

American football needs a new name

Peter Cateno, Rotterdam

Football is played with the foot.

With The Gazette’s great reporting from the World Cup in Russia going on until mid-July (which the United States should have been part of), we can all be in awe how it’s played with the foot. Why is it then, that American “football” isn’t played with the foot, nor with a ball, but rather with what seems to resemble a ball of sorts?

Great American sports like basketball are played with a basket and a real ball. Right on! Baseball plays with a ball between bases. Perfect! Handball runs players around with a ball. Perfect.

Maybe the time has come to reset our home-grown sport and elevate it to the world stage with a more fitting name. Any suggestions?
