Letter to the Editor 8/22: Vote to preserve our democratic way of life

The upcoming national election could not be more important.
It is no less than a decision between preserving what’s left of our democratic republic and dictatorship.
Donald Trump is already more than halfway to imposing an autocracy. A dictator dictates, and Trump has already shown that his “executive orders” supersede any actions taken by a weakened and cowardly Congress.
As commandeer-in-chief, he has ordered William Barr, who should be our attorney general but is apparently his private attorney, to call up his homeland security forces to trample on the rights of peaceful demonstrators.
Trump appears ready to declare national emergencies and establish martial law whenever he can’t get what he wants. And the Supreme Court is only one appointment away from pounding the final nail into the coffin of what once was our justice system.
But the Founding Fathers granted us the ultimate weapon against this movement toward fascism and dictatorship: the vote.
Of course, Trump and the National Repugnant Party, by eliminating polling places and resisting voting by mail, are trying very hard to prevent as many of us as possible from voting, especially if we aren’t white males. We’d better vote while we still can.
