Letter to the Editor 8/23: Rubenstein left great memories behind

With great sorrow, I read of the passing of Sonia Rubenstein.
In 1980, I moved to Schenectady in order to find a safe school for my son, Robert. I found a place in Schenectady that had a school which he could easily walk to, Mont Pleasant High School.
I don’t remember how I met Sonia Rubenstein, but I ended up meeting with her at City Hall where she worked.
She listened to all of my grief and was so supportive. Sonia always gave me wise advice and was a mentor.
The only thing I knew about Schenectady was G.E. and a school that my son could attend while I was at work.
Sonia gave me the whole history of the area, who’s who, and we discussed our children, grandchildren, life, the future, politics and more.
Later, Sonia introduced me to Karen Johnson (Sonia was running Karen’s campaign for mayor) and to the League of Women Voters, which had some of the most informed women in the region.
The last time I saw Sonia was two years ago at a LWV’s dinner. We sat together discussing everything imaginable. Sonia’s sharp sense of humor often left me laughing.
Sonia Rubenstein was one of a kind, and I will miss her greatly. However, my memories of our shared conversations will always give me comfort. My deepest, sincerest sympathy to Sonia’s family members and friends. May you find comfort and strength in your fond memories of Sonia.
Flora L. Ramonowski
