Frustrated. Angry. Disappointed.
That is how I’m feeling after my Philadelphia Flyers were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the New York Islanders in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Saturday night.
The 4-0 loss was a microcosm of this series and, for that matter, the entire conference playoff round. The Flyers were thoroughly dominated by the Islanders in the game. The Islanders were the better team in the series. It should have been over in five games.
After dominating the round robin and earning the top seed in the East, the Flyers struggled. They didn’t look that great in beating the Montreal Canadiens in six games in the East quarterfinals. If it wasn’t for their sensational goalie Carter Hart, they could have been ousted by the Canadiens.
And when fourth-line winger Tyler Pitlick has as many goals as your star forward and captain Claude Giroux, that’s a major problem. Most of the Flyers’ star players were non-factors in the playoffs.
I will continue to watch the playoffs, but my enthusiasm has been dampened because my bubble has burst.
My colleagues, though, on the news side at The Daily Gazette will be happy because they won’t have to hear my loud cheering anymore.
I went 2-2 in my conference semifinal picks. I am 11-9 in the postseason.
Here are my conference finals picks.
Tampa Bay Lightning vs. New York Islanders — Lightning in 7.
Vegas Golden Knights vs. Dallas Stars — Knights in 6.
